How to Create a Facebook Business Page

Also as Facebook changes regularly - this guide was written in April/May 2011.

This guide will take you through how to create a Facebook Business Page (aka Facebook Like Page).

Since the demise of the Facebook 'Static FMBL' application, it has been confusing for users of Facebook to create an effective 'Like Page' for their business, organisation or interest. I wanted to write this eBook guide to show that it is still easy to create a great Like Page with other, similar applications to the original Static FMBL application. I was confused earlier this year when these changes on Facebook occurred and found it very difficult to find direction on this. I did my own research and have condensed what I found into this guide. I hope it is useful.

This guide will show you how to create a Facebook Like Page for your business or organisation, including how to set up an initial Landing (or Welcome) Page (or Tab) to give a new visitor a great experience. Subsequently we will be writing other informative articles in this area about Facebook Like Page design and engaging with your Fans.

Step 1: How to Create a Basic Facebook Business Page:

1. The first stage in how to create a Facebook business Page is to set up a basic Business Like Page and then customise:
2. From your personal profile, go to any other company's or person's own Like Page.
3. Click on 'Create a Page' (located in the bottom left of the page)
4. The best choice on the next page for an effective Like Page is 'Brand or Product'; this can be fine-tuned later if necessary.
5. Next, you can choose the type of business/organisation you are, under 'chose a category'.
6. Then you can type the name of your brand (and name of your new Like Page) into the 'Brand or Product' box.
7. Your basic Like Page will now be created - ready for customisation.
8. The first 'tab' within your new Like Page that you will see is the helpful 'Get Started' page. Click the 'Update Category' button.
9. The 'Get Started' tab guides you through some of the things that you will need to and we will revisit this in a later guide. Our first priority is to customise your Like Page with a page known as a 'Landing' or 'Welcome' page (or Tab).
10. After you have confirmed the Category of your page ('Update Category'); you have created your basic Like Page.
11. You now have a basic Like Page set up; all ready to customise and make it more effective.

Step 2: Switching Between Your Personal Profile and Your New Like Page:

1. Now you have a new (basic) Like Page, you can switch between it and your Personal Page.
2. This is a new feature in Facebook. You can use Facebook as yourself (your Personal Profile) or as your business/organisation/interest (your Like Page).
3. To switch between the two, click on the 'Account' tab at the top-left of the page, then 'Use Facebook as Page'.
4. You will then be presented with all of the Like Pages that you have created (or that you are an administrator for - we will come on to administration of pages in another eGuide) see above.
5. Click on the 'Switch' button for the Like Page that you want to switch to.
6. You are then back to the 'Get Started' tab within your Like Page.

Step 3: Customising Your New Facebook Like Page:

Now that we have created a Facebook Business Page, we want to make your Like Page more appealing and more effective for you to build your Facebook community around your business/organisation/interest.

1. The first thing to do (as also suggested by the 'Get Started' guide) is to upload an image or logo.
2. This is straightforward: Click on 'Upload an Image'.
3. Then click on 'Choose File'.
4. This will then take you to a file explorer, allowing you to choose a picture or logo file from your own (local) computer.
5. Double-click on the photo that you want to upload.
6. This picture/logo (also sometimes known as an Avatar) is then published to the left-hand side of your Like Page.
7. Note: All pictures that you upload are also shown at the top of your 'Wall' tab also.
8. Steps 2 onwards on the 'Get Started' page can be carried out later, and we will be writing a further guide for these steps. We need to set up a Welcome page before these steps.

Step 4 continued: Setting up a Welcome Page.

Note: Part of how to create a Facebook Business Page is creating a Welcome Page. A Welcome Page is also sometimes known as a 'Landing Page' is it is where a visitor 'lands' the first time they access your Like Page.

1. From the 'Get Started' tab(page), click on 'Edit Page'.
2. You will arrive at the Manage Permissions tab.
3. You will need to go to the 'Apps' (short for 'applications') tab.
4. Facebook may ask you to switch back to your Personal Profile identity at this point. This is fine - click the 'Continue as You' button.
5. You will then be taken to the 'All Apps' (applications) part of Facebook.
6. Search for 'Static HTML'.
7. Then click on the 'Static HTML: iframe tabs' (with the star logo).
8. You will then be directed to the page for this App.
9. Click on the 'Go to App' button.
10. Facebook will then ask which of your Like Pages you would like to add this application to.
11. Choose the Like Page that you have just created.
12. Facebook will then ask you for confirmation that you want 'Static HTML: iframe tabs' to be added to your new Like Page; click on the 'Add Static HTML: iframe tabs' button.
13. Once confirmed, you will see that there is now a 'Welcome' tab included on the left hand side menu. This will become the page that all of our visitors see initially when they first arrive at your Like Page.
14. We can now go to our new Welcome tab and create some content for our Welcome page. Click on the Welcome tab to get Welcome Page screen.
15. We will come back to this page - so leave this internet explorer window open for now.

Step 5: Creating Content for Your Welcome/Landing Page

To create this content I use a company called Squarespace. Squarespace is a hosted web building tool that makes it very easy to create your own high quality web site(s). We are going to use it to create some HTML code to input into our Welcome Tab for our Facebook Like Page.

Note: You do not have to use Squarespace; there are many tools for doing this. What we are trying to achieve here is to create some content using a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. This enables you to create content very easily - just typing in your copy (text) and inserting pictures, video, forms, et cetera, just the way that you would using Microsoft Word. Using these tools (or applications) you can then choose to view the HTML version of what you have created. You can then copy and paste this HTML code into your Welcome Page on Facebook and the Welcome Page will be created.

1. Once your Welcome Page content has been created in your WYSIWYG editor and you have viewed and copied the HTML version of that content, we are ready to past that HTML content into the Facebook Like Page Welcome tab.
2. We can then go back to the Facebook Welcome page that you should still have open (if not - don't worry, just go back to Facebook and open the Welcome page again).
3. Then right-click with your mouse and paste the HTML code into the top box from the two in the Facebook Welcome page editor.
4. You can then see the HTML code in the Welcome Page box.
5. Then click the 'Save and view tab' button to save what we have.
6. Then click on view your tab as a fan (or as a non-fan; it does not matter at this point).
7. You will then be able to see your new Welcome page as your visitors will.
8. We can still add more content in the form of pictures and video to make it more appealing, but the basic technical techniques have been covered here now.

Step 6 - Adjusting Settings For Your Welcome Page.

We now need to set our Like Page so that whenever a new visitor comes to our Like Page, they see the Welcome Page first.

1. From the 'Get Started' page click on the Edit Page button.
2. You will then see the 'Manage Permissions' page.
3. Currently the default Landing Tab will be set to 'Wall'.
4. Select the drop-down menu and change the option to 'Welcome'.
5. The Default Landing Tab is now set to 'Welcome'.
6. You can then click on 'View Page' to exit from the edit mode.
7. You can then navigate around your Like Page by using the tabs on the left of the page.
8. Each time you click on the Welcome page you will see the HTML version of the page. You just need to click on the 'Save and view tab' to see the page as your visitors will see it.
9. And view tab as a non-fan.
10. It is now possible to use a WYSIWYG/HTML editor (like Squarespace) to add further content to your Welcome page.

As I have stated initially, it is basically taking your assets and what made you successful in the first place and finding new ways to use them effectively.

As I mentioned in the opening paragraph, there are many ways for Facebook to haul in boatloads of money and Mark Zuckerberg be all smiles. It is not only "how do we generate revenue", but equally important "when do we start with which one". That's tricky, and a distinct timeline can only be set by the company itself, of course. My suggestion would be to start the Event/Pictures point in parallel with the business network.

The latter has the most impact, the first can be set up the easiest and they don't interfere with each other. I have no affiliation with Facebook or any insight or access, so these are just my humble suggestions and assumptions. Whatever is going to happen, it is definitely exciting to see, where Facebook is actually going and what is possible for them.

About 5,00,000 people have used this one. This is the most interactive application on Facebook which gives every user a chance to feel like genius. If you've got a great idea and you think people will like it, just transform it into an application, sit back and watch how you can change the world using Facebook.

Files:

This is a storage service from Box.net that allows you to upload and store files directly from their profile. Although it's just 1 GB and doesn't even compare with remote storage facilities like MSN's Skydrive, this is useful if you want to display these files on your profile. Friends can then download these files. This is really easy to use, but these files are visible to all your Facebook friends and you may not really want everyone to see them.

Pixlr Editor:

Pixlr is a free, Firefox-powered online photo editor. Whether you want to upload new photos or edit older ones, Pixlr is an excellent application to help you through the process. Here's an application that's so useful that one wonders why no one thought of it before. It's a free application that allows you to create a direct link to your Facebook profile page, choosing a name of your choice. So you could create a link such as www. profile.to/YourName, thus making it easier for friends or contacts to search and finds your profile with just a few clicks. Only thing is that you'll need to hurry because this has been catching on and already has more than a million users.

This application allows companies to conduct marketing campaigns on Facebook for as less as $5 and as much as $250. It encourages users to visit your Facebook page, interact with it and then share the results with your friends, leading to even more publicity for your brand.

Entertainment

Anybody who's using Facebook knows about the apps that are most entertaining like iLike and SuperPoke. We've listed some of the popular and some not so well-known entertaining applications that can make life with Facebook more colourful.

Music by iLike:

This one allows you to add a music tab to your profile, create and share playlists with your friends, receive concert updates, and participate in DJ contests. It's already got about 10 million users so don't hang back. Bumper Sticker: An incredible range of typical bumper sticker blurbs abound in the Bumper Sticker application which allows you to view, share and use stickers on your profile and those of others. These are virtual stickers that range from the comic to the bizarre. A must-have application.

Choose a picture of your friend, apply the kind of treatment you'd like to give it, and there, you've got a caricature. You could post it on his wall or share it around with friends. There are a couple of other applications, which do the same thing (like Get My Caricature), and you could try those too. The effects are pretty hilarious at times and you could add this application just for kicks. Just be careful what pictures you choose to make a caricature out of unless you don't mind getting your kicks in the real world too.

Sketch Me:

For more sober representations, opt for Sketch Me. You can choose how dark you'd like your sketch to be and then publish it for your friends.

Flixster:

Flixster allows you to check out who likes the same kinds of movies among friends, post and read reviews of the latest movies, find new movies that you'd never have heard about otherwise and check your knowledge of movies.

Quizzes:

People just can't stop taking quizzes on Facebook. These quizzes range from being sensible to funny. You can spend years answering all the different quizzes created by users. Add this application to find out which Sex and the City character you are, whether you resemble Maya Sarabhai or Sahil Sarabhai more, who you were in your past life, etc. - there are too many to cover here. If you're really busy, skip this one. On the other hand, if you want to act busy at your computer, this is the one for you.

My Plans:

Organising a party or get together is usually dependent on innumerable calls to friends or family and often, by the time you end up making a concrete plan either your cell phone battery has run out or you've used up all your talk time. Try My Plans on Facebook that allows you to notify, share and discuss meeting plans with all your friends and family who are on Facebook, making the task a whole lot easier.

There are really a lot of great things you can do with Facebook and even make your status really interesting instead of just using the common status updates. Social networking web sites such as Facebook aren't always about wasting your time. There's a lot you can do with it. There are apps from games to professional utilities - all at one place...

A significant shift has occurred in social networking trends among the Indian youth over the last one year: almost everybody who ever had an Orkut account now has one on Facebook - and few have even opted out of Orkut altogether. Over the last four months, the number of active users of Facebook has more than doubled and July 2009 saw more than 3.2 million Indian users. Comscore, the internet marketing and research company, says 68.2 per cent of the time spent by Indians on social networking, was spent on Orkut. But just ask your friends and family about which hangout they prefer while on the net and you'll probably find the Comscore results surprising. Let's face it: for a growing number of Indians, Facebook is the new Orkut.

One reason for Facebook's growing popularity is its aggressive marketing strategy. Facebook has ensured it stays visible in the media through tie-ups with various major companies such as Aircel for mobile internet services, Vodafone (and their ZooZoos) for free access to Facebook - with all its pokes, updates and egg sending - on your cell phone, and Viacom's MTV (India) for 'Celebrity Connect' - finding out which celebs you resemble. Its failed attempt to buy Twitter, and the recent acquisition of FriendFeed - has also helped to keep it in the public eye.

The other reason is that it's packed with dozens of unique features, an immensely interactive, instantly gratifying and deeply interesting range of applications (or 'apps'), and surprising tweaks that let you have fun while being in constant touch with your friends and family. Let's take a peek at a few of the things that you could do on (and with) Facebook to bring the 'social' back into your network and to make it more exciting, entertaining and cool.

Applications

Log in to Facebook.com and take a good look at the bottom left corner of the screen. You can't miss that little button on the toolbar, which says f applications. On the f applications toolbar, click on the link that says 'Browse More Applications'. This will open up a Pandora's box of applications for you to choose from.

Games

We'll start this quick tour of applications with a look at three of the most happening games on the Facebook site, in order of popularity.

FarmVille:

While about 62 per cent of the Indian population is actually employed in the agricultural sector, all of a sudden, the population of virtual farmers has boomed, thanks to FarmVille. This online game in which anyone can set up and cultivate his/ her own virtual farm has nearly 35 million users and is definitely the most popular game on Facebook. Developed by Zynga, San Francisco, it allows you to become an online farmer - plant, grow, harvest and sell crops, buy or breed livestock - to earn 'coin income'. Each crop requires a few hours to grow (Tomatoes need eight hours, Raspberries need two, sunflowers need 23 and so on) and each give you an XP (short for experience).

The more crops and trees you plant, the more experience you earn. Farmers can invite other Facebook friends to become neighbours and send special gifts according to the level. Access to which crops you can grow depends on the number of points you've got - and therefore, which level you've reached in the game - pineapple seeds, for example, are only available to you once you reach level 15 (Professor of Agriculture) having gathered 4,500 points

Mafia Wars:

This is a multiplayer browser game that's on MySpace and Tagged as well but has an incredible 23,367,984 monthly active users (and growing) on Facebook alone. This is another hit game by Zynga, but unlike the slow, domestic space of FarmVille, it encourages you to loot, rob, kill and create an Al Capone like empire. Set in New York City, Little Italy or Cub, players must choose a character, do jobs to earn cash, build a gang by recruiting members and fight other mafia conglomerates - all with limited stamina, energy and health

As in FarmVille, you can 'level up' by getting more points and gaining XP by doing more jobs. As you rise up in levels, you are rewarded with access to new features, new weapons and new jobs.

MindJolt Games:

More than 50 games clamour for your attention on the MindJolt Games application. Connections on Facebook depend on one person connecting with another and if they accept, you are then connected to the same network. Then both parties get status information and updates about each other. Twitter works differently in that you can choose to follow random people or people you know. Anyone you choose to follow is not obligated to follow you back. You don't have to know them or be friends with them, you follow them if you're curious enough to want to know about their activity. But as smartphones began hitting the market sporting Facebook-specific buttons, the rumors subsided.

If the latest rumor is to be believed, Facebook is reconsidering the option to build its own phone. Facebook is an important component of new Windows Phones as well, as they come with Facebook and Twitter integrated into the operating system, letting you sync your contacts with those on your social networking sites.

It remains to be seen how a Facebook phone is going to fare in the marketplace, when there already are strong players like iPhone and Android.

Smartphone specifications:- Reportedly, the smartphone will be powered by a customized version of Google's Android operating system, and will be optimized to let you access Facebook the way you do on PCs.

Once you have set up the personal Facebook profile, you are ready to get started. But, don't take time to add information like education other details in this special account unless you plan on using it for your own personal use. You are just setting up this account to have a platform to launch and access your new Facebook Business Page.

your Facebook, click on your profile page right up here next to your picture.

here and then you scroll down to "Likes" click on "Likes" it's gonna show you
everything you've liked. Remember this because we're going to use this in
another tutorial about those spammy sites that you didn't know you liked. Anyway, that's a different story.

Now you
click on "Manage" and you click on "Edit Privacy". Right there it is OK? So remember you went to edit privacy
and now it gives you a whole list I'm going to scroll down here so you can see
it all. All the way down to others. Whatever is
important to you if you don't care about who sees your movies you can leave it
public.

If you just want your friends to see
what movies you like making friends you don't want anybody to see it except
yourself then you can make it "Only Me." This way you know what you like and
you've given credit to other websites you'd say "Why would you want to keep it
